The Eagles take on Argentina on June 26 at Saint Petersburg in one of the last matches of group D, and Simone reckons that Messi’s present form which saw him finish the La Liga season with 32 goals would be a problem for the Eagles defence.

“Lionel Messi is a special player. He is difficult to stop if he’s in good shape and he wants to win the World Cup before retiring so I don’t see any of the teams stopping him,” Simone said after Tuesday’s 3-2 victory over Nigeria’s Super Eagles Team B in a friendly at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo the Akwa Ibom capital.

Messi’s desperation to clinch the trophy explains why Simone has admitted it would be difficult for the other teams to defeat Argentina who on Monday announced their final 23-man list.

And while he may have tacitly written off the chances of the opponents, Simone still conveyed his best wishes to the 32 teams that will be going to Russia.

“But good luck to all the teams going to the World Cup,” the Atletico Madrid coach said.

Argentina who will be going to the World Cup as one of the pre-tournament favourites will also play Iceland, Croatia in the first round of the competition.
