World Football governing body FIFA has appointed New Zealand referee, Matthew Conger for Friday’s
crucial FIFA World Cup Group D clash between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and Iceland.

The choice of Conger should be a welcome development for some members of the team especially for those
who featured for the U-23 national team in the soccer event of the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Conger who has been refereeing since his teenager days was in charge of the Dream Team match against Sweden which they won by a lone goal scored by Sadiq Umar.

Some of the players that were part of that squad are current Eagles captain John Mikel Obi and William
Troost-Ekong.  Mikel also captained the side that went ahead to win the bronze.

At 39 years, Conger will be assisted by his compatriots Simon Lount, Tevita Makasini from Tonga as
first and second assistant referees, Ricardo Montero from Costa Rica will be the fourth official while
Hiroshi Yamauchi will be the reserve referee.

Nigeria are aiming for victory against a highly disciplined and organized Iceland team who defied the
odds to pull a 1-1 draw against Argentina on match day one.

Born on October 11, 1978, Conger has also officiated at the 2015 and 2017 FIFA U-20 FIFA World Cups, in
New Zealand South Korea respectively.

Conger is the second referee that has handled Nigeria’s matches both at the Olympics and
in Russia.

The first was Sandro Ricci of Brazil who handled one of Nigeria’s matches at the Olympics and the Croatia, Nigeria opening match last Saturday
