Eagles get Turkey referee for Argentina clash

Federation of International Football (FIFA) has appointed Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for Tuesday’s decisive group D World Cup clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Argentina at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

 

Federation of International Football (FIFA) has appointed Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for Tuesday’s decisive group D World Cup clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Argentina at the Saint Petersburg Stadium.

This was confirmed on the football governing’s body official Twitter handle on Sunday who also announced that the 41-year-old will be assisted by compatriots Bahattin Duran (Assistant Referee one) and Tarik Ongun (Assistant Referee Two).

Netherlands’ Bjorn Kuipers will be the fourth official while Sander Van Roekel also from Netherlands will serve as Reserve Assistant.

The Nigeria, Argentina encounter will be Cakir’s second game in charge at this year’s FIFA World Cup after handling the Morocco, Iran fixture.

At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Cakir officiated the games involving hosts Brazil vs Mexico (group game), Algeria vs Russia (group game) and Netherlands vs Argentina (semi-final).

Five years ago, Cakir was heavily criticised for the sending off Manchester United’s Nani in their UEFA Champions League round of 16 clash at Old Trafford.
