Eagles star begins New Year on a glorious note

Nigeria international and Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, claimed his second trophy in Saudi Arabia after helping Al Nassr beat Al Taawon to the Saudi Super Cup on Saturday night.

Musa becomes the first Nigerian star abroad to win a trophy in the New Year after playing a key role in Al Nassr’s penalty shoot-out victory over 2019 King’s Cup winners Al Taawon at the King Abdullah Stadium.

It is the second title Musa will be celebrating since moving to Arabia following a league title triumph at the end of the 2018/19 season.

The Saudi Super Cup is a one-off final match between the previous year’s league champions and the King’s Cup winners.

Al-Nassr have not won the Cup despite this being their third appearance in the competition, finishing as runners-up in both the 2014 and 2015 editions of the Super Cup. For Al-Taawoun’s, it’s their first appearance in the competition.

It was the first-timers who drew the first blood when Cameroonian forward Leandre Tawamba Kana gave Paolo Sergio’s men the lead in the 18th minute.

But Abderrazak Hamdallah equalised for Al Nassr just before the hour mark meaning both teams had to settle for a 1-1 draw after the 90 minutes.

Al Nassr had the last laugh, though, triumphing 5-4 in the ensuing penalty shoot out. Ahmed Musa and Al Nassr are favourites to also defend their Saudi Pro League title as the champions are the clear league leaders, enjoying a five-point advantage over second-place Al Hilal.
