Eguavoen interested in making Super Eagles job permanent after AFCON victorious outing

Super Eagles interim boss, Austin Eguavoen, has admitted he would be willing to take the Nigeria head coach job on a permanent basis.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Eguavoen was appointed as the interim coach following the sacking of Rohr in December.

Eguavoen’s appointment was initially met with scepticism, but the Super Eagles impressive displays at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has led to calls for him to be handed the role permanently.

The former Gent defender is expected to leave the role after the competition, with Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro expected to take over permanently, according to soccernet.

The NFF appointed the Portuguese tactician as the team’s permanent coach at the end of December. However, there are reports that Peseiro may not take over if the Super Eagles win the AFCON title in Cameroon, with Eguavoen likely to hold on to the role.

And when asked if he would love to take charge of the team permanently, Eguavoen said it would be an honour, although he is also ready to serve in any capacity.

“These questions have come many many times, but I’m very happy with the position I occupy with the NFF”, Eguavoen said in his press conference ahead of Nigeria’s game against Guinea-Bissau.

“And yes, If they asked me for it, yes maybe, just maybe, and when we get to that river, we will cross,” he added.

Eguavoen has already led the team to the knockout stage, but he will hope the team can go all the way and claim a fourth continental title.
