Eguma faults referee’s spot-kick call against Katsina United

Rivers United head coach, Stanley Eguma has faulted the decision of the centre referee of their last weekend league clash with Katsina United to award a controversial penalty kick to their hosts a decision which he claimed had an overbearing influence on the outcome of the game.

Centre referee allegedly stunned Rivers United players when he pointed to the spot on 18 minutes without any major incident from which Tasiu Lawal converted the opener for the Changi Boys before Usman Barau’s
strike in the 51st minute put the hosts in the vantage position to claim the maximum points.

The Pride of Rivers deservedly halved the deficit in the 68th minute through Cletus Emotan but Eguma was still at a loss on the reason for the controversial penalty kick decision which denied them a possible
point in Katsina.

“I still don’t understand why the referee awarded that penalty,” Eguma told the club media.

“No Katsina United player appealed for it. I didn’t see any infringement but the referee awarded it. We just have to pick ourselves up from it and focus on our next game.”

Rivers United are in the seventh spot with 19 points from 14 games.

They will host Sunshine Stars on Sunday at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
