Egyptian trio make CAF’s AFCON team of the group stages

Three Egypt national team players have been named by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) team of the group stages.

Despite their shaky performances in the group stages, the Pharaohs were still one of the top defensive teams in the tournament, having conceded just once in three games.

Therefore, it comes as no surprise that two of Egypt’s best performers in the backline, in goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shennawy and centre back Ahmed Hegazi, made the team of the group stages.

The duo is also joined by Liverpool superstar Mohamed Salah, who scored one of Egypt’s two goals so far this tournament, who was put on the bench.

Hosts Cameroon have the most players in the squad with four, with AFCON top scorer Vincent Aboubakar (5) being the only starter.

Salah’s Liverpool teammate and Guinea captain Naby Keita was also included in the starting line-up after leading his side to a second place finish in Group B.
