EPL: Chelsea boss Tuchel left frustrated with Leicester draw

Chelsea all but secured a third-place finish in the Premier League with a draw against Leicester at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, beaten in the FA Cup final by Liverpool at the weekend, fell behind early on when James Maddison curled a fine effort beyond goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

However, Marcos Alonso equalised towards the end of the first half when he was picked out superbly by Reece James and volleyed in.

Chelsea dominated the second half and had numerous chances to take all three points.

Hakim Ziyech went close with a free-kick while Romelu Lukaku – who had been largely quiet – headed wide.

But Christian Pulisic failed to convert the best chance for a winner when he sliced wide from eight yards with the goal at his mercy.

The result means Chelsea stay third, three points ahead of Tottenham, but with a vastly superior goal difference.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel said: “It sounds like a broken record. Unfortunately, a familiar feeling where we let opponents escape with draws where we should and deserve to win.

The effort and commitment was huge. We created a lot of chances, didn’t allow anything. They had one shot outside the box and again we get punished very early. It was a good response but we struggled with chances. It is like the same record.

“The result was more important than to risk everything to win. Pulisic needs to [score his chance]. These are the kind of chances that decide matches. He knows it, everyone knows it. There is no doubting the quality it is maybe focus, confidence and a bit of luck.

“This season we are constantly in the top three. It feels a bit strange as the top two are so far ahead and you can be trapped thinking this is normal. Of course we want to do better and there is always room for improvement but we were fighting with Tottenham and Arsenal behind us, who can focus and hunt us.

“We showed the commitment that was necessary and I think it is an achievement where the positive things are superior than the negative.”
