The forward opened the scoring in his return game just before half time. Mason Greenwood’s initial shot was saved by Freddie Woodman, but Ronaldo was there to convert from close range.

Man Utd did not have it all their own way as Newcastle equalised in the 56th minute. The goal came via a counter-attack as Allan Saint-Maximin set up Javier Manquillo. The defender did well as he found the bottom corner with his effort.

The Magpies were only level for six minutes, though. It was Ronaldo made an impact again after being played in by Paul Pogba. The 36-year-old fired the ball through Woodman’s legs to make it 2-1.

The result was put beyond doubt in the 80th-minute. Bruno Fernandes got the goal this time in superb fashion from outside the area. Jesse Lingard added a fourth late on.
