Euro 2020 final: Businesses and schools to open late on Monday

Amidst wait for official announcement from government, business and schools will give stafff a lie-in on Monday to sleep off boozy celebrations if England win the Euros.

Should the Lions emerge victorious Sunday, it will be their first silverware since the 1966 world cup.

Schools are reportedly telling pupils to enjoy the 8pm kick off against Italy on Sunday evening and come in as late as 10:30am the next day.

The news comes as Gareth Southgate’s England saw off Denmark on Wednesday to book their place in the final, meaning the manager could be the first since Alf Ramsey in 1966 to win a trophy.

Unions and HR experts have called for lenience from employers to avoid people calling in sick if they are denied leave.

England celebration: will it control Monday?

TUC boss Frances O’Grady said: “Bosses should talk to staff and try to let people who want to watch games do so either at work, or at home and claim back working time afterwards.”

The Sun reports that even the PM wants bosses to go easy on staff who show up late.

“We would want businesses who feel able to consider it if they can,” Boris Johnson’s spokesman said.

The paper also reported that head teacher Gemma Donnelly of Braywick Court School in Berkshire was among many telling parents she will accept pupils not coming in until 10.30am after staying up late to watch the final.

The PM has already tweaked the rules to accommodate extra time and penalties, after bringing an emergency tweak to the Commons to allow pubs to open until 11.15pm, as opposed to the normal closing time of 10.30pm on a Sunday.

Alan Price, chief executive at Bright HR, said: “Companies should make the most of the morale boost for the country after lockdowns, and encourage staff to book annual leave for the day.”

Around eight million workers, which is one in four, have already booked the day off and millions more are expected to throw sickies.
