Europa fallout: David de Gea’s wife battles social media trolls

David de Gea’s wife Edurne Garcia has been left fuming after she was targeted by trolls on social media.

Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea failed to stop any of Villarreal’s penalties in the Europa League final on Wednesday night. He also saw his own effort saved as United lost the final 11-10 in the shootout.

It saw trolls target his Spanish pop star wife on social media with Edurne hitting out at the abuse.

She tweeted: “Yet again it’s been proved there is still much to be done to fight against sexism in society.”

It came after one wrote: “The moment De Gea gets back to the team hotel, Edurne will say she’s got a headache.”

With another adding: “I’d pick Edurne for Spain and De Gea for Eurovision.”

And a third saying, “Will Edurne let De Gea pick up the baby now?”

De Gea and Edurne who have been together since 2010, welcomed a baby daughter, Yanay, in March.

De Gea was left dejected following Europa League defeat, which saw the goalie extend his run of penalties faced without a save to 40.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did consider a late switch to Dean Henderson, saying: “You go through every scenario, of course, and it [De Gea’s penalty record] had crossed my mind in the build-up to the game but we were confident in David and prepared.

“Anything can happen in a penalty shootout. I stuck with the keeper who played all of the game.

“I’ve got to say the penalty shootout was high quality, but we didn’t do enough in the 120 minutes to score more goals and that’s the disappointing bit.

“We had pressure; we had moments where we felt if we can just kick on a little bit now we can get a goal. But we just couldn’t.”
