Europa: Gareth Bale sets fresh target for 2nd leg

Gareth Bale had goals on his mind as he stepped out at the Puskas Arena on Thursday night  and helped Spurs deliver three in 35 minutes to take a grip on our UEFA Europa League round of 32 tie against Wolfsberger AC.

The winger set up Heung-Min Son’s opener on 13 minutes before powering home the second himself 15 minutes later. Lucas Moura added a spectacular solo effort for 3-0 on 34 minutes as we flew out of the traps in Budapest.

The Austrian side fought back and pulled a goal back in the second half but we restored our three-goal advantage ahead of Wednesday’s second leg (5pm) thanks to Carlos Vinicius’ late strike.

“We had the mindset of coming out and scoring as many goals as we could,” said Gareth. “It was important to get the win, that breeds confidence, and hopefully this is the start of a good run.

“We wanted to be bright, wanted to be on the front foot, wanted to attack, wanted to score goals. We needed to score as many as possible to help us get through and this was a good start.

It’s great to get four away goals, now we look forward to the second leg, take it as if it’s 0-0 and start again with a fresh mindset.”
