Europa League: Gerrard confident Rangers will bounce back

Steven Gerrard is confident Rangers can bounce back from their defeat to Lyon after getting their Group A campaign off to a disappointing start at Ibrox.

A Karl Toko Ekambi effort and James Tavernier own goal condemned the champions to a 2-0 loss on Thursday night.

Lyon proved to be too good in the crucial moments of the encounter as they clinched a deserved win.

But Gerrard knows there is still plenty of time on their side as European attentions turn to the trip to Prague in a fortnight.

Gerrard said: “I don’t think we’ve got any major complaints about the scoreline. I think it’s a bit harsh on the players over the 90 minutes in terms of general play.

“We have been punished for two sloppy moments, one in the first half and one in the second.

“At these level good players and high calibre players, teams at this level, will always punish you when your team’s open.

“We are frustrated with the two goals we have conceded and the result, but the two goals aside I don’t think there was too much between the two teams.

“We are disappointed with tonight’s result but there are still five games and 15 points to play for so it is still very early.

“We have to appreciate that this was a tough game tonight.

“It’s not the start to the group that we wanted but there is still a lot of football to be played and still a chance for us to get out of this group and that is the primary aim.”
