Ex-Everton ace Royston Drenthe cleared of money laundering

Former Everton winger Royston Drenthe has been acquitted of money laundering after police found more than £150,000 in cash found in his car.

The ex-Real Madrid star, who also had spells with Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, suggested the money, which was found in packets back in 2019, was from wages he received as a player.

The Dutchman spent the 2011/12 season in the Premier League on loan from Los Blancos at Goodison Park.

After initially retiring in 2016 to pursue a career in rap music, Drenthe is now with Spanish third-tier side Racing Murcia.

During the trial in the Netherlands, the jury heard that police stopped his car in the south of the country two years ago.

Following a search, cops discovered several packets of money containing €176,500.

The player was adamant that the money was from a football salary and he was set to loan it to a third party.

And the judge ruled there was insufficient proof to convict Drenthe of money laundering, subsequently acquitting him of all charges.

Drenthe’s lawyers claim the 33-year-old has been forced to declare bankruptcy after the cash was seized, with the hopes they will be able to reclaim it in the coming months.

Joes Blakborn via the Sun, said of his client’s bankruptcy “That was a consequence of him no longer having access to his money.

“All of this only happened because Drenthe didn’t want to say where the money came from.

“We will try to get it back for him. It is his money after all.

“It had clearly come from his profession as a footballer. That is the only thing he has ever done.

“He loaned out his legally-earned money to a third person. He has never been involved in money laundering.”

Drenthe is looking to prolong his career in Spain, having joined from Dutch side Kozakken Boys in January.

The winger was extremely highly rated at the start of his career, joining Real in 2007. However, his promising career hit the skids after a bust up with Jose Mourinho, the player revealed.

After returning from a loan move to Hercules, Drenthe explained: “Mourinho was a bit p***** off when I came back to Real.

“I tried to become a star in Madrid and people should have respect for me because I tried. But Mourinho made me out to be a difficult guy.”
