Fabinho makes Liverpool admission as Brazil ponder FIFA punishment

Fabinho is looking forward to playing a part in a “really intense” period for Liverpool – despite the threat of suspension hanging over his head.

The Reds refused to release Fabinho and compatriot Alisson Becker for Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers during the ongoing international due to coronavirus quarantine concerns.

The Brazilian FA are now pondering whether to ask FIFA to invoke their five-day rule which sees players who fail to link up for national team duty then banned for a brief period from featuring for their clubs.

Should such a decision be made, both Fabinho and Alisson would be ruled out of Sunday’s Premier League trip for Leeds United.

But with the Reds set to embark on a period of seven games in 22 days – during which their Champions League and League Cup involvement begins – Fabinho is eager to get cracking.

“I didn’t go to the national team so it will be almost two weeks without playing, so I want to play again,” said the midfielder.

“I want to play in the Premier League and the Champions League.

“I’m excited for this moment, we will play each three days, so everyone needs to be ready. The manager will need every player

“The mentality of the group is really good, everyone is ready for this, everyone is in good shape. So we’re very excited for this moment.

“It will be really intense, it will be tough. But we’re ready for this.”

Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Leeds behind closed doors in April, a game which was played with protests taking place outside the stadium over the Reds’ brief flirtation with the European Super League.
