The 20-year-old took a boot and shinpad to the head and was forced to leave the field for treatment with blood pouring from his face.

He was also left with studmarks on his chest from where Sandro had landed.

To make matters worse for the Dutchman, his side conceded from a set-piece while he was getting treatment.

Lucas Tousart headed in from Houssem Aouar’s cross to give Lyon the only goal of the game as they claimed a surprise win over the Italians.

The defender came back on to the field sporting a unique bandage and was able to complete the 90 minutes.

Fans reacted to de Ligt’s injury with comparisons to Tyson Fury and Terry Butcher.

Writing on Twitter, @nicodegallo said: ‘De Ligt (has) got more blood on him than Fury did all fight.’

Sports website Joe wrote: ‘Meanwhile in the Juve game, Matthijs de Ligt is about to go full Terry Butcher.’
