FG to splash $5,000 on gold medalists

The Federal Government through the National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced various cash gifts for
athletes that win medals at the Commonwealth Games which got underway on Wednesday in Gold Coast, Australia.

athletes that win medals at the Commonwealth Games which got underway on Wednesday in Gold Coast, Australia.

A source informed SportingLife.ng that the government has reportedly earmarked $5,000 about (One Million, eight hundred thousand Naira) for athletes that win gold, while $3,000 will be given to the silver medalists.

Bronze medalists would get $2,000, which is about (N750,000), our source further said.

A total of 90 athletes are representing the country at the games and would be competing in Athletics, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Boxing, Special Sports, Table Tennis and Gymnastics and basketball in the men’s category.

Nigeria’s maiden appearance at the Games was in 1950 in Auckland, New Zealand with Joshua Majekodunmi winning the country’s first medal in High Jump.
