FIBA Women’s World Cup: D’Tigress secure first win, beat Turkey 74-68

Nigeria’s women basketball team D’Tigress on Sunday night bounced back from their loss to Australia to defeat Turkey 74-68 in their second group B game of the 2018 FIBA Women’s World Cup played at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife court in Spain.

It would be Nigeria’s first ever win at the World Cup.

The Nigeria side led by Otis Hughley took the lead in the second quarter 22-17 after Turkey had dominated the first quarter ended 15-7.  The loss to Nigeria would surely come as a shock to Turkey who won their opening game against Argentina.

It was a Nigeria affair in the third quarter, finishing 23-10 against a Turkey side, that had initially defeated the Africa champions in a warm up game 89-51 prior to the tournament.

Nigeria were able to hold on till the end, despite losing the fourth quarter 22-26.

Top performers for D’Tigress were Shooting Guard Sarah Ogoke who registered 22 points, Power Forward Evelyn Akhator with a game high 10 rebounds and 13 points

D’Tigress are drawn in Group B of the competition along with Australia, Turkey and Argentina whom they meet on Tuesday.
