Flying Eagles to open second phase on Sunday with 35 players

Flying Eagles will resume for the second phase of their preparations for the WAFU Cup Competition on Sunday in Abuja with 35 players expected to be called to camp by the head coach, Paul Aigbogun.

The technical crew of the U20 national team recently concluded thefirst phase of the build-up to the sub-regional tournament slated for Togo recently and the few discovered players are expected to be invited to camp with those that prosecuted the Africa U20 Cup of Nations qualifiers before the squad to Togo is picked.

One of the assistant coaches of the Flying Eagles, Abdu Maikaba while disclosing this to SportingLife.ng said that the major reason for the second phase of the preparations is to ensure that they have a strong U20 team that can weather the storm not only in Togo but also at the Africa U20 Cup of Nations proper.

He said they are enthusiastic about the tournament in Togo because it will serve as build up for the Nations Cup where they will be hoping to pick one of the tickets to the FIFA U20 World Cup next year.

“We are going to resume camping on Sunday and we are expecting 35 players to come to Abuja for the camping exercises,” Maikaba told SportingLife.ng.

“We had the first phase which was concluded recently and we were able to discover some few players from the exercise. We are going to team those discovered in the first phase with those that have been with the team and took part in the Nations Cup qualifiers to see what will come
out it.

“We want to raise a formidable team for Nigeria and we are happy with the WAFU Cup tournament in Togo because it will help us know the potential we have and what we must do before the Nations Cup where we shall be gunning for one of the tickets to the World Cup.”

Maikaba revealed that if everything goes according to plan, they are expected to leave for Lome, Togo on December 3 ahead of their first game in the tournament two days later.
