Furious Evra insists some Man United players deserve a good slap

Manchester United legend Patrice Evra believes some players in the club need to be slapped, following their humiliating 6-1 bashing by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Sunday.

A performance that saw Evra even threatening to quit his role at Sky due to the immense pain in watching United’s performance.

United took the lead after just two minutes through Bruno Fernandes’ penalty but fell behind five minutes later thanks to goals from Tanguy Ndombele and Son Heung-Min.

Anthony Martial was sent off for swiping out at Spurs’ Erik Lamela before Harry Kane added a third for the north Londoners just seconds later.

South Korean winger Son added a fourth just before the break and Evra even ordered Manchester United fans to stop watching the match.

An angry Evra told Sky at the interval: ‘I don’t want to comment on this game. It’s a catastrophe, we say in France. What is happening now?

‘My advice to any (Manchester United) fan now is to buy a Playstation, buy a player like (Jadon) Sancho or even (Lionel) Messi (for Manchester United) and start playing because this is a disaster.’

Much of United’s poor play in the first-half was down to their defensive frailties. Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly were all at sea for the four goals and Evra took aim at the latter after he was drafted into the side in place of Victor Lindelof.

The former defender said: ‘Bailly gets the chance to play instead of Lindelof and he made that mistake, so don’t cry after when you don’t play. It’s so naive.

‘I’m devastated and I’m a positive person. Right now I understand the pain of all United fans, no one of this team deserve to play right now.’

Spurs added two more goals in the second-half to round off an embarrassing afternoon for United, though nobody was prepared for the bombshell Evra was going to conjure up after the game.

The defender sensationally claimed United’s performance was so bad that he wanted to quit as a pundit for Sky.

On the verge of tears, Evra said: ‘Alexis Sanchez made a comment (about) when he first signed for United that after one training session he asked his agent to end his contract. That’s what I’m going to ask to Sky – to end my contract.

‘I know you have to filter when you talk on TV, but it’s a shambles.

‘I feel what all the United fans feel. That’s why I would prefer to commentate on different games other than United if I (am to) continue working for Sky.’

Many will point the finger at Manchester United head coach Solskjaer after the result, who is the club’s fourth manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Evra admitted he had sympathy for the Norwegian coach after the match and took aim at the club’s hierarchy who had not backed Solskjaer properly in the transfer market.

The Frenchman said: ‘I expected nothing (from this season). I feel sad, also for the manager. Now we’re gonna start to talk about him, he’s gonna be the next one (to leave) – but what about the board?

‘Every year since Ferguson, how many managers have been sacked? So that’s the solution?

‘Every time with transfers they don’t go with the right price. It’s like (if I go): “I’m going to buy a car, I know the price but I’m asking for less.”‘

Evra’s anger was so extreme that he believed several figures in the club warranted a ‘slap’ after the match and said he would be violent himself towards those culpable for United’s drop in form.

‘I’m really emotional now, what is going on with my club?’ he cried. ‘It’s difficult to break a man like me, I’m positive.

‘I don’t promote violence but many people need a good slap in this club right now. That’s what I’d do right now if I’m working at the club.’

Evra did not let up, however, about his disappointment in the United players, who he believes do not care about the shirt in the way he did.

The five-time Premier League winner concluded: ‘It’s about the body language, the love for that shirt, the passion, I don’t see any players understanding the shirt and that they are carrying on the history of the club.

‘Lindelof must be celebrating and having a party at home even if he’s got Covid. Bailly gets the chance to play and that happens.

‘It’s (like an) open bar, every team playing against United. Come on, come on. I’m really, really angry.’
