Gerrard reacts to Liverpool’s first ever Premier League silverware

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has reacted to his former side’s first ever Premier League title win and heaped praise on Jurgen Klopp.

The Merseyside outfit were confirmed champions on Thursday night without kicking a ball as Manchester City fell to a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea.

Not long after the game ended, Liverpool fans and players alike celebrated with former captain Gerrard taking to Instagram to issue a heartfelt message.

In his post, the former England international stated: “Congratulations to all @liverpoolfc on winning the premier league . Incredible achievement from a fantastic squad of top players . Lead by a world class manager and coaching team also a special mention for the backing from FSG . And lastly and most importantly the fans who have waited 30 years . Let the party begin.”

Gerrard represented Liverpool for 17 years and became club captain at just 23-years-old.

He won every trophy possible with his boyhood club aside from the Premier League and he was likely beaming with pride at tonight’s outcome.

It’s no secret the 40-year-old is a big fan of Klopp and Gerrard recently claimed a statue of the German should be placed outside Anfield.

Gerrard inspired Liverpool to Champions League victoy in 2005, but never clinched English football’s top honour.

“Knowing Jurgen, he won’t want to be put in that bracket,” the current Rangers boss explained to The Athletic.

“I know what he’s like, he’s humble and respectful. When you look at the scale of the job he’s done, for sure he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as those iconic managers.

“What you need to take into consideration is that when Jurgen took over Liverpool they weren’t close to being the best team in the country, they weren’t even in the top four.

“To come to Liverpool when he did, get to the amount of finals that he has, deliver the sixth European Cup and then deliver the first league title after 30 years…

For me, someone like Jurgen should be rewarded now. It seems like in football we often wait until people get older before their achievements are fully recognised.

“But I know the owners of Liverpool won’t let that happen. When Jurgen delivers the league they should already be starting work on a statue of him.”

Liverpool’s triumph last night will have helped Gerrard vanquish the demons of his famous slip against Chelsea back in 2014.
