Golden Jubilee:  Kaizer Chiefs to adopt new approach

After 50 years of existence Premier Soccer League side Kaizer Chiefs have elected to adopt a new approach in their quest for more laurels.

The club which parades Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi began restructuring Wednesday with the sacking of Chief Coach Enrst Midderdorp followed on Thursday with the sacking of his assistant Shaun Bartlett. The Club went on twitter Thursday to say;

“Kaizer Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung, the Board of Directors and the club’s management would like to further announce that they have agreed to an early termination of assistant coach Shaun Bartlett’s contract”

The shake up is coming just days after the side narrowly missed the league title. The Soweto giants had apparently hoped to win the title this season to serve as garnishing to 50th anniversary celebration, a dream which went up in smoke at the last minute.

Motaung detailed that there were several reasons considered before doing away with the technical crew led by the German tactician.

“We deliberated and considered many aspects relating to the team including the way of playing, our performances and the results before arriving at the decision. We truly believed and hoped that our 50th anniversary would be better and indeed looked promising. The decision taken is part of the strategy to have the team win trophies again and to make our supporters happy because they truly deserve the better”

Kaizer Chiefs were at the summit of the log from August 2019 to September 2020 but it was Mamelodi Sundowns who eventually walked away with the biggest prize in South Africa, securing the league title on the final day of the season. They also made history as the only South African team to win the PSL title in three successive seasons on two occasions.

Chiefs had been expected to make clean sweep of their final two games against Chippa United and Baroka respectively but managed to clinch a lone goal against Chippa but pulled unimpressive draw against Baroka to end on 57 points, two points behind Sundowns who finished and clinched the title on 59 points in 30 matches played.
