Grassroots stakeholders ecstatic about Aisha Buhari Cup

Women’s football stakeholders at the grassroots have commended Her Excellency, the First Lady of Nigeria, Dr. (Mrs) Aisha Buhari for the upcoming invitational tournament happening this month in Lagos.

Lagos will be agog when the maiden edition of the Aisha Buhari Cup begins next on Wednesday, 15th September – a soccer event coaches of the Women Accredited Football Academies (WAFA), a grassroots league in the state are excited about.

Prince Ganiyu Adetunji, owner and coach of Pheonix FC highlighted the importance of the showpiece, saying it will motivate the girl-child in choosing football as a career and will improve the women’s game on the continent.

“I want thank our First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari for this wonderful football fiesta for the ladies and also commend the local organizing commitee for the job they have done so far,” Adetunji echoed. “The significance of the ABC is that it will improve women’s football on the continent and the world at large because of the calibre of the participating teams.

“Also, the showpiece will help convince the girl-child to choose football as a career and make parents and guardians have a rethink about the negative narrative of the women and football.”

Akoni Segun Boaz, a board member of WAFA: “ABC will motivate all women players with high expectations of delivery in their respective teams by boosting their morale and also make them feel valued and appreciated. All WAFA teams see it as a huge opportunity to increase the pace of our developmental programs so as to prepare players for greater things to come in the future.”

FatimahZubair, a budding player: “As a grassroots player, l see this as an avenue to get together with senior players and get encouragement from them. lt will also allow the spirit of competitions burn in grassroots players as the competition will be graced by people of honour.”

Oyibo Oghene from Delta Babes: “Through this tournament, many undiscovered talents will be unveiled and thereby project optimism and hope into the minds of the upcoming players most especially the grassroots, amateur and semi-professional players in the football space.”
