Guardiola Clamps down on Mendy for Attending Joshua’s Fight

Pep Guardiola rebuked Benjamin Mendy after the Manchester City defender turned up late to training on Sunday.

Mendy’s timekeeping has been a problem before and Guardiola was disappointed by the 24-year-old’s tardiness to a physio session.

The left back – who at Wembley to watch Anthony Joshua beat Alexander Povetkin the night before – is recovering from a bruised metatarsal. Sportsmail understands he was three hours late.

‘I spoke with him. He should be here and he knows it,’ Guardiola confirmed before lamenting Manchester’s roadworks.

‘He arrived late, that happens sometimes, in the last period a lot have arrived late because of the traffic. Manchester is under construction, the players arrive late. They have to drop their kids at school.

‘I expect him back when he’s fit. Now he’s injured, he’s not a physical problem, he’s injured and when he’s OK he’s coming back and when he decides to play he’s going to play.’

Certain issues have besieged Mendy’s second season, not least a one-year driving ban delivered last week after accumulating 24 points on his licence.

Sportsmail reported earlier this month that Mendy had been fined by Guardiola for arriving late to training.

Mendy has not played for the club since victory over Newcastle on September 1 but City have not revealed a timescale on his return.

Guardiola has been delivered some positive news with Kevin De Bruyne expected to return to training in the next week.

De Bruyne has his eyes set on the Manchester derby on November 11 and Guardiola added: ‘He’s making the last steps, starting training in part in the next days – everything is going well.’
