After losing two previous French Open final, Halep, the world number one beat Stevens the defending US Open Champion 3-6, 6-4 and 6-1.
Stephens – who had never lost a professional final at any level – began the match brilliantly and led by a set, but the Romanian fought her way back into the contest.
