HiFL will improve sports infrastructure in higher institutions — Organisers

Smarting from what it has termed a successful competition, the orgainsers of the Higher Institution Football League (HiFL), say it will help to improve sports infrastructure in the country’s higher institutions.

Higher Institution Football League

Olamide Adeyemo, the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Page Sports and Entertainment, organisers of HiFL made the assertion on Thursday in Lagos while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the benefits of the collegiate football league.

Adeyemo said the competition among the higher institutions in Nigeria was a developmental one that would have a positive impact on the overall development of sports in the country.

“When we started this competition, we had only 16 teams, but we have seen it grow to 32 teams with many teams both public and private joining the competition.

“The competition has standard set, but we cannot achieve all that we wanted at once, the development has to be a gradual one.

“By and large, we are going to see to the development of sports infrastructure in the universities and see how it can be improved.

“It may get to a stage whereby schools may be disqualified on the account of the poor pitch because we want to maintain a standard and make it competitive,’’ he said.

Adeyemo said the orgainsers give the higher institutions appearance fees to encourage the upgrade of their facilities, adding that the competition had produced a worthy champion.

“It is only HiFL that gives appearance fees to the participating teams before the match; this is aimed at encouraging the teams.

“The competition has shown that we are not biased or have any favourite among the competing teams, the best team emerged winners in the competition.

“We have maintained fairness and standard all through, we have the same team that we had last year in the final, but the results were not the same,’’ he said.

NAN reports that University of Calabar (The Malabites) are the winners of the 2019 HiFL Cup after handing a 4-3 defeat to the 2018 champions, University of Agriculture, Markurdi (The UAM Tillers).
