‘I still want to play’ – ex-Arsenal man Wilshere believes he has ‘a lot to give’

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere has insisted that he “still wants to play” football as he still has “a lot to give” before he retires.

Wilshere was considered to be one of the brightest prospects in world football when he first broke through at Arsenal.

Unfortunately, his career has been severely impacted by injuries. He left Arsenal in 2018 as he joined their London rivals, West Ham, on a permanent basis.

Wilshere was only able to play 19 times for them in just over two years. He was released in October 2020 and a couple of months later he joined AFC Bournemouth.

The 29-year-old played 17 times for them before he was released at the end of last season. He is still without a club but he has returned to Arsenal for training.

Wilshere has told Sky Sports that he still has “something to prove” as a footballer:

“At the moment I am doing my coaching badges and the club is helping me with them and I am helping some of the Academy kids out as well.

“It is certainly something I enjoy and maybe something to look at in the future but for now I still want to play.

“I feel like I still have a lot to give and something to prove which is why I don’t want to finish playing now and start a coaching career just yet.

“It’s nice to be back seeing some old faces who I spent a lot of my life with.

“Fitness-wise I am getting there and it’s great to be back training with good players and the quality is only going to be beneficial for me moving forward.

“I’m there [at Arsenal] until January and there’s no news on any clubs but hopefully something will come up then.”

Last month, Arsene Wenger admitted that he felt “very responsible” for Wilshere’s injuries:

“I see more positivity. Before there was more kicking and I must say the media allowed that. The VAR has brought more respect for the offensive game.

“Sometimes the more technical guys were kicked. Why? It was not very encouraging. We have moved forward from that.

“We (Arsenal) always tried. It was a frustration sometimes. When I look back at players like (Jack) Wilshere, (Aaron) Ramsey who have been injured early in their career and when you are a manager you feel very responsible for that.”
