Kamaru “The Nigerian Nightmare” Usman believes he is ready to fight for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight title after dispatching former welterweight and middleweight title challenger Demian Maia in five rounds in Chile on Saturday.

The 31-year-old mixed martial artist who was born in Benin City wants to fight the champion Tyron Woodley before the end of 2018.

“I think I should fight for the belt next. I just dominated (Maia) better than Tyron Woodley. Tyron ran from him the whole fight. Tyron threw, what, the fewest strikes in a championship fight ever? And I just went out and I just dominated the guy from start to finish,” Usman said.

“I want to fight for that title by the end of the year, if possible.”

Usman remains undefeated in the UFC with a record of 8 wins and the Nigerian said he had nothing but respect for Maia despite handing the veteran Brazilian his his third consecutive defeat

“Nothing but respect for Demian Maia, a legend in the game,” Usman said, after securing a unanimous decision win. “It was an honour to come in and compete with him.”
