Infantino: ‘Let’s shun rumours or gossip’

President Gianni Infantino said he has ‘talked to many clubs’ about the Super League but stressed that ‘doesn’t mean FIFA was behind the project’.

All eyes were on the President at the 71st FIFA Congress today, after the New York Times revelations on his possible involvement in the breakaway competition.

But the FIFA chief condemned the story as ‘rumours or gossip’ and denied he has been part of the creation of a so-called Super League.

“We should look at the facts, not the rumours or gossip,” Infantino said at the FIFA Congress. “I have worked in various senior positions in football for decades.

“I have talked to many clubs and the Super League has been a topic of discussion, everyone in football knows that.

“It’s FIFA’s responsibility to discuss football with interested parties. Listening to some clubs and talking to them, does not mean that FIFA was behind the project, colluding or plotting.”
