Mesut Ozil has been named the surprise captain for Arsenal’s International Champions Cup clash against Paris Saint-Germain  which is underway in Singapore.

The decision appears to have gladdened Gunners fans who have always felt the German likes to shy away from
responsibilities.

The German has quickly repaid Arsenal manager Unai with a goal neatly finishing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cross to put the Gunners 1-0 up in the International Champions Cup fixture.

Ozil was part of the Germany side that crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage this summer, following two defeats and one victory.

The midfielder suffered a lot of criticism in the weeks that followed, which culminated in him retiring from international football this week.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery is pleased with Ozil’s commitment for cutting his post-World Cup holiday short to return to training early – and made him captain for the day.

“My idea is to know every player and to know, also, the personality of the players,” said Emery. “We want to keep the respect for these players, to find the captain and choose very well the best player for that.”

Emery previously spoke out about wanting to have five captains at Arsenal.
