JUST IN: CAF moves Cameroon’s Q/final match as Aboubakar pleads with fans

 

CAF has moved Cameroon’s quarterfinal match versus Gambia original billed for Olembe Stadium on Saturday to Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium Yaounde.CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed the change of venue.

This is coming after stampede at the Olembe stadium where Cameroon edged out Comoros witnessed stampede that has left about eight people dead and about 50 injured and hospitalized.

Some images showed supporters climbing over fences and people being trampled while unconscious on the ground ahead of Cameroon’s match against Comoros on Monday evening which ended 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

Meanwhile Cameroon Captain Vincent Aboubakar has appealed to his country men and women to comport themselves as the championship progresses adding that they cannot afford to record any more mishaps, and expressed the team’s sadness over the incident.

Aboubakar  published a statement on social media saying: ‘The Indomitable Lions  and their entire staff deeply wail about the tragic incident that occurred at the Olembe stadium on Monday 24th January 2022, during the Cameroon vs Comoros match for the Round 16 of the African Nations’ Cup.

‘To the families of the victims, they extend their heart-felt condolences and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

‘The Indomitable Lions urge the football fans in Cameroon and Africa to be highly disciplined and responsible within and outside the stadiums so that football matches in general and the tournament remain festive moments.

‘They also call for the preservation of security, brotherhood and shared happiness in the stadiums.’

Cameroonian President Paul Biya has equally ordered an investigation into the tragedy.
