Kaizer Chiefs set to extend Eagles goalie Akpeyi’s contract

South African side Kaizer Chiefs are set to offer Nigeria international goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, a two-year extension to his current contract that expires at the end of June 2022, according to a Kickoff report.

Akpeyi joined the Amakhosi from league rivals Chippa United in January 2019 and has battled hard for the side’s number one gloves with fans favourite Itumeleng Khune. Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen are the other goalkeepers at the club.

Akpeyi’s experience and shot-stopping skills powered Chiefs’ 2019/20 title challenge, but the side later finished as runners-up to eventual Premier Soccer League champion Mamelodi Sundowns.

Kaiser Chiefs have had a slow start to this season’s campaign, with the self-acclaimed most supported club in sub-Saharan Africa languishing in the ninth position on the PSL table.

But their form has picked up in recent weeks with Akpeyi restored to the starting eleven. The 35-year-old goalie has kept two clean sheets conceding just once in three games to guide Stuart Baxter’s men to one win and two draws.

The former Warri Wolves goalkeeper is expected to be in goal when the Phefeni Glamour Boys host Super Sports United on Sunday in a matchday eight clash.

On the international scene, Akpeyi remains third-choice goalkeeper behind Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho despite being the oldest member of the current Super Eagles’ setup.
