Karim Onisiwo on target as Mainz earn three points away

Nigeria born Austria international Karim Onisiwo was on target on Saturday as Mainz beat Bourussi MGladbach at home.

The strike is a huge relief for Onisiwo who successfully ended a run of 15 Bundesliga games without a goal and equally marks Mainz’s first win at Borussia-Park in six years.

Onisiwo opened score for the visitors in the 10th minute of the game after enjoying an assist from Dutch import Jeremiah St Juste. The homers however leveled up 16 minutes later before Mainz again shot ahead four minutes to end of the match thanks to Stoger.

Marco Rose’s side dominated possession but struggled to breach the Bundesliga’s second-most porous defence. Bo Svensson, meanwhile, brought on two fresh strikers for the final 20 minutes with Robert Glatzel and Jonathan Burkardt looking to bring fresh ideas to lead a push for a winning goal at the other end. Just as the game looked to be heading for a draw, Mainz’s hero against Bayer Leverkusen last weekend made his mark once again.

Danny da Costa’s cross was headed down by Stefan Lainer and Stöger mopped up the rebound with a ferocious hit across goal past Sommer.

And that was enough to earn Mainz a massive three points to take them within one point of Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot.
