Keeperless Comoros aim to shock hosts Cameroon

It will be hydra-headed challenge for debutants Comoros as they file out against hosts Indomitable Lions of Cameroon today at the  Paul Biya Stadium.

Aside from having all their goalkeepers knocked out by injury/Covid forcing them to place outfield player to man the post, the Indian Ocean nation will also be playing against home supporters expected to turn out in their numbers today.

As if those were not enough the player turned goalkeeper will also have free scoring Vincent Aboubakar to contend with.

Debutants Comoros kissed the headlines after sacking four time champions Ghana in the group stage and should they turn the table against hosts today, it will be recorded perhaps as one of the biggest upsets of the Covid era.

The tournament so far has been full of surprises and there are strong indications that more will come in the course of the knockout stage.

Only few hours ago ,Tunisia’s Qatar based Msakni masterminded the ouster of three time champions Nigeria forcing the West African country to abandon their chase for a fourth Nations Cup title.

Stallions of Burkina Faso who would have faced Super Eagles in the last eight after beating Panthers of Gabon on penalties now have to tackle Tunisia instead.

The Indomitable Lions have enjoyed an unbeaten campaign so far, finishing top in Group A.

With the home crowd roaring them on, Cameroon will head into the knockout stages with real belief and confidence in their chances of going all the way in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations following an impressive group-stage run.

After losing just one game in the qualifiers, the Indomitable Lions got the 33rd edition of the continental tournament underway on January 9, when they came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Burkina Faso.

This was followed by a dominant 4-1 victory over Ethiopia four days later, when Vincent Aboubakar struck twice in the second half to inspire another comeback win before wrapping things up in the group stages with a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde last time out.

Now heading into the round of 16, Toni Conceicao’s men could not have wished for a better draw and will be licking their lips as they go up against an inexperienced Comoros side who are making their first appearance at the tournament.

Some pundits have however warned that all it takes to crash out like Nigeria did is just one un-replied goal and should ‘underdogs’ Comoros shoot into the lead early and maintain their steam to the end, shocker will only be the post-match story.
