Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has been ruled out from the Africa Cup of Nations after failing to recover from a knee injury sustained last Sunday against Madagascar in Nigeria’s final group match.

The Nigeria captain was initially ruled out for one week with a swollen knee which would have kept him on the bench just for the Round of 16 clash against Cameroon this Saturday.  Saturday’s match is billed for the Alexandria Stadium at 5pm.

But further medical checks on the 31-year-old captain revealed that would no longer play any part for the senior team aiming for a fourth AFCON glory.

The absence of the former Chelsea midfielder is likely not to be felt on the pitch going by his performance in the two matches against Madagascar and Burundi wihich led to head coach, Gernot Rohr replacing him.
