La Liga: Sevilla vs Barcelona and Villarreal vs Alaves postponed

Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) have ruled in favour of LaLiga and postponed two of this weekend’s matches in the Spanish top flight: Sevilla vs Barcelona and Villarreal vs Alaves.

This is due to the conflict with CONMEBOL, as several South American players were called up to play in this international break and would only arrive back in Spain just before these games were set to take place.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) understood that this was not a cause of force majeure to postpone the match, which forced LaLiga to appeal to the CSD to meet their request.

Villarreal and Barcelona have Champions League matches on Tuesday and were scheduled play their LaLiga Santander fixtures on Saturday.

In Sevilla’s case the players affected are the Argentinian trio of Gonzalo Montiel, Papu Gomez and Marcos Acuna.

Argentina’s last game in this international break will be in the early hours of Friday, September 10, at 1:30am Spanish time, which is just a day and a half before Sevilla vs Barcelona was set to take place in LaLiga Santander.

What the Spanish government has done, via the CSD, is grant the precautionary measures requested by LaLiga president Javier Tebas last Friday after the RFEF did not want to postpone the matches.

However, they have allowed time for the RFEF to make the arguments they deem appropriate and give the clubs time to make their sporting arrangements.
