Lagos Open: Nigerians bow out

Despite putting up a good fight in the second round tie against fifth seeded Indian Riya Bhatia, Oyinlomo Quardre led the exit of Nigerian players from the 2019 Lagos Open International Tennis Championship holding at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC).

Backed by the massive crowd, unseeded Quadre took the first set 6-2. The Indian bounced back to beat Quadre 6-2 in the second and the Indian also prevailed over the Nigerian 6-2 in the final set.

After the game, the Indian star admitted that she was stretched by the Nigerian star. “It was really a tough match against the Nigerian because she is a very good player and too good to be a Nigerian,” said Bhatia.

Nigeria’s best ranked player in the competition Joseph Imeh retired 15 minutes into his game against Zimbabwe’s Garanganga Takanyi due to injury. The Zimbabwean was leading 3-0 before the Nigerian left the court.

In some other games, Nigeria’s Blessing Samuel lost to Samir Sandra of India 6-0, 6-0 in the women’s singles. Fourth seed, Austria’s David Pichler dismissed America’s Bushamuka William 6-1, 6-0 on Court 7 in an encounter that lasted for 51minutes. Eighth seed, Indian Goveas Aryan edged out Kenya’s Kevin Cheruiyot 6-3, 6-2 in just over one hour.

On centre court, number one seed, Tunisia’s Mansouri Skander worked hard for his victory as he beat Nigeria’s Emmanuel Idoko 7-5, 6-4. Bahrain’s Setkic Aldin alsl bundled out Indian Yash Chaurasia 6-3, 6-1 on court five. The tournament is sponsored by Heineken.
