Leicester City target Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer

Leicester City have placed Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer on a list of central defensive targets.

Foxes scout Sean St Ledger travelled to Glasgow to watch Thursday’s Europa League over Lazio.

Despite the form of Jonny Evans and Caglar Soyuncu former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers admits he’s planning for a future without 36-year-old captain Wes Morgan and is scouring the market to replace Harry Maguire after the England defender’s £80m switch to Manchester United in the summer.

Ajer, also watched by Crystal Palace, was placed under scrutiny on Thursday night.

Norwegian international Ajer emerged as a key Parkhead player under Rodgers but signed a deal last year tying him to Celtic until 2022.

‘We’re looking at all options to see if we can strengthen in January,’ said the Leicester boss earlier this week. ‘It’s always a difficult window.

‘You’ll always look and if there’s value there, then we will do something. If not, then ok, we know the players are going to improve and develop and we’ll take it through to the summer

‘I’ve always tried to be positive in the January window. It’s normally worked fairly well for us when the availability has been there.

‘[At centre-back] it’s one where we’re planning forward, if you look at Wes (Morgan) and where he’s at in his career.’

Rodgers has already had a summer move for Scotland midfelder midfielder Callum McGregor rejected by his former club.

Denied the opportunity to move to talk to the English Premier League side the 26-year-old is currently in discussions with the Scottish champions over a pay rise.

Engaged in a battle for a ninth straight title and top of Europa League Group E Celtic are now in a strong position to progress to the last 32 in the New Year and are unlikely to entertain bids for key players in January.
