Ndidi who was a member of the Nigerian squad that won a bronze medal at the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt has been excused from Leicester’s pre-season training so far but Rodgers remained optimistic that the defensive midfielder would be available for selection when the season begins in two weeks.

The ex-Liverpool manager revealed that Ndidi will return to training next week ahead of the 2019-20 season having been given a long holiday after his international commitment with Nigeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

Last season, the combative midfielder featured in all of the Foxes’ league matches and was ranked as the top
tackler in the English top-flight.

After missing their first three friendly outings, Rodgers said the 22-year-old will resume training next week but will miss next Saturday’s fixture against Serie A side Atalanta.

“He [Ndidi] will be back towards the Atalanta game. He won’t be involved in that, but he will be training for a few
days before that,” Rodgers was quoted by Leicestershire Live.
