Leicester’s Tielemans sets new Premier League record in Man Utd win

Leicester City midfielder, Youri Tielemans, set an impressive new record during his side’s 4-2 victory over Manchester United on Saturday.

The 24-year-old now has the most consecutive Premier League appearances of any outfield player currently active in the top flight.

Tielemans has not missed a Premier League game since New Year’s Day 2020, meaning he has accumulated 64 straight appearances in the league for Leicester.

His new record comes after James Ward-Prowse was suspended for Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Leeds United on Saturday.

Ward-Prowse had recorded an impressive 102 league appearances on the trot – having not missed a game since December 2018 – but picked up a red card away at Chelsea before the international break.

Taking to Twitter, the ever-reliable OptaJoe noted the stat, referring to Tielemans as a ‘Duracell’ battery due to his constant energy.

“64 – With James Ward-Prowse missing a Premier League game for the first time December 2018 (102 in a row), the new outfielder with the longest active streak of successive Premier League appearances is Leicester’s Youri Tielemans (64 games since Jan 1st 2020). Duracell,” wrote OptaJoe.

Tielemans’ performance against United was a fine one, capped off an audacious chip from the edge of the box to open the scoring for his side.

Speaking about the Belgian’s display, manager Brendan Rodgerssaid after the game: “He’s an outstanding young player.

“He’s been away and played a couple of games over the international break, and then to come in and play with that poise and quality in the game…

“He’s scored one and he was unfortunate, De Gea makes a great save, tips it onto the post. Him and Bouba in there, along with James, they’re always ready to take the ball and that allows us to play through and build our game.

“Overall, he was outstanding.”
