Lewandowski equals Ronaldo record

Following his goal in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over Chelsea in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie on Tuesday night, Robert Lewandowski has equalled a remarkable record set by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Poland international assisted twice and found the back of the net in the Bavarians’ victory at Stamford Bridge, with the strike being his first goal in the knockout stage of the Champions League in two years.

Lewandowski has now struck 11 times in the tournament this season, and nine of those goals have been scored in away matches.

As a result, the 31-year-old is the first player since Ronaldo to score nine away goals in Europe’s premier club competition, a feat the Portuguese superstar achieved in the 2013/14 campaign with Real Madrid, according to Opta Sports.

It has been an incredible season for Lewandowski so far, with the forward having struck 39 times in 33 matches across all competitions for Bayern.
