Lewandowski: “FIFA Club World Cup win would be icing on cake”

Bayern Munich talisman Robert Lewandowski has said that winning the FIFA Club World Cup on Thursday would be the “icing on the cake” in an incredible period for the club.

Lewandowski set up a final showdown with Mexican side Tigres in Qatar after getting both of Bayern’s goals in their 2-0 win over African champions Al Ahly in the last four on Monday.

It means Bayern have the chance to secure a remarkable sextuple of trophies after already coming out on top in the Bundesliga, DFB Cup, UEFA Champions League, DFL Supercup and UEFA Supercup over the past year.

Should Hansi Flick’s team win again on Thursday, they would emulate the success of Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona side in 2010.

“The Club World Cup title would be the icing on the cake,” Lewandowski said at a pre-game press conference on Tuesday. “Only one team has won six titles in one season and we have the chance to become the second. It’s a chance to write footballing history and it’s also a big challenge and a big day for us.

“When you are so close to winning a trophy, you have to give everything to make it happen.”

Lewandowski was named the world’s best player for 2020 after scoring 55 goals all competitions as Bayern repeated their Bundesliga, DFB Cup, and Champions League success of the 2012/13 season.

“We have the chance to win the sixth title,” he said. “We know what that means, not just in the history of Bayern but in the whole of football. We haven’t played our best football yet. We know that the most important phase of the season is coming up, with the Champions League as well. We’re feeling good. We want to win every game and to showcase the football that we can play
