The fans had hoped to see the team in flying colours, especially Victor Osimhen’s dazzling show after his remarkable showing in the french local league.

LOSC boss Christophe Galtier went with a 3-4-2-1 system that relegated Jonathan Bamba and Ikoné to the bench. After Luiz Araujo had a first attempt for LOSC, visiting forward Kevin Gameiro – the French international – forced the first save from Mike Maignan.

Osimhen failed to get an attempt on target and then in the 40th minute Yusuf Yazici curled a magnificent shot against the crossbar as LOSC were unlucky. Soon after, Valencia enjoyed a let-off as no handball was given against Jaume Costa.

Valencia took the lead (63′) when Gameiro escaped down the right and centred for Denis Cheryshev to finish against the run of play. LOSC had chances to equalise and sub Loïc Rémy missed the target from close range (74′) before two yellow cards in quick succession saw former Lyon defender Mouctar Diakhaby dismissed.
