VAR then ruled for encroachment in the following clearance and City were told to retake the spot-kick.

Sterling once again saw his effort saved but he pounced on the rebound to make it 1-0.

And Liverpool fans sarcastically joked about the social media claims that only they benefit from the Stockley Park decision-makers.

One tweeted: “But it’s VAR helping Liverpool.”

“VAR only favours Liverpool though,” another said.

A third wrote: “Remember when City fans said VAR gives everything to Liverpool?”

“But VAR Want liverpool to win the league,” joked another.

One remarked: “I thought VAR was supposed to be helping Liverpool?”

“And they say VAR wants Liverpool to win the league loool,” said a sixth.

A seventh posted: “And people think that Liverpool has VAR on their side.”

City were reduced to 10 men after just 11 minutes as Ederson brought down Diogo Jota outside the box.

Substitute goalkeeper Claudio Bravo replaced Sergio Aguero for the Citizens.

Former Wolves winger Michael Kightly, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, was critical of the decision.

“We have seen the best and the worst of VAR in 30 seconds. It is killing the game,” he said.

“There was a City player encroaching as well. He was in front of the Wolves player who clears and it is just because he got there first. It had no relevance to where the penalty was going.

“VAR has got to go.”

Despite their numerical advantage, Wolves went into the break trailing 1-0.
