Liverpool slams £10million price tag on set to depart Neco Williams

Liverpool right-back Neco Williams could leave the club this summer as they have set a £10million starting price on the Wales international.

Williams has been playing second fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold since joining the first-team set-up, so he could be seeking a permanent move for more regular playing time.

The 20-year-old made six Premier League appearances last term and 14 in all competitions for the Reds.

He joined Liverpool when at six years old and progressed through their academy, making his senior debut in October 2019 in the EFL Cup against Arsenal.

The defender made his Premier League debut for the Reds in June 2020 as a substitute in their 4-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Liverpool rejected a loan offer for Williams from Southampton back in January, and the likes of Leeds United, Aston Villa and Burnley are all reportedly interested in the defender.

Interest is likely to heat up in the summer transfer window, and the Echo understands that Liverpool are open to selling the Welshman.

It is also said that the Reds won’t stand in Williams’ way if he is to pursue a move, with first-team football high on his agenda.

The issue should be resolved after Wales complete their Euro 2020 campaign.

Williams started for Rob Page’s side in their 1-0 loss to Italy last night.

Despite the loss, Wales progressed through to the knockout stage of the competition on goal difference.

Matteo Pessina scored the 39th-minute winner as Italy topped Group A with a 100 per cent winning ratio and equalled their national record of 30 games unbeaten.

Wales were forced to play the last 35 minutes with 10 men after Ethan Ampadu was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on Federico Bernardeschi.

There were only around 400 Wales supporters present in a Stadio Olimpico crowd of around 14,000 amid tight coronavirus restrictions.

But the travelling fans made themselves heard as the action got underway and Italy set up camp in the Welsh half.

Williams and co will head to Amsterdam to play the runners-up of Group B, most likely Denmark, Finland or Russia.
