Liverpool were blocked from signing Leicester new man Daka

Liverpool were denied the chance of signing Patson Daka from RB Salzburg before he joined Leicester city  due to their failure to shift two of their fringe players.

Daka, who scored 51 goals for the Austrian side in 59 games over two seasons, instead moved to Leicester in a £23million move.

The Zambian is yet to start a Premier League game for the Foxes, but has been tipped to be Jamie Vardy’s long-term successor at the King Power Stadium.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the Reds were keen on Daka and would have moved for the 22-year-old had they managed to find buyers for Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi early on in the window.

Shaqiri did eventually move to Lyon for £5million, but only after Daka had signed for Leicester, while Origi remains at Anfield.

Romano said on the Here We Go Podcast: “Yes because he had chances to join many Premier League clubs. Many Premier League clubs were interested.

“Liverpool this summer had a strategy, sell players and then eventually sign players.

“If they sold Shaqiri or Origi in the first days of June then they had a chance to sign Patson Daka because they were interested in him.

“They never made an official bid but they had interest in this striker from Salzburg.

“Then it collapsed because of the timing on Shaqiri, who was sold in August to Lyon and Origi who is staying at the club.

“Liverpool were interested in Patson Daka but Leicester were great in this deal, they convinced the player and they found an agreement with Salzburg with the right timing.”
