Lukaku ‘so emotional’ after Chalobah’s first senior Chelsea goal

Romelu Lukaku has revealed how we was overcome with emotion after watching Trevoh Chalobah score his first senior Chelsea goal at the weekend.

Versatile academy graduate Chalobah registered a near-perfect Premier League debut at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as he helped Thomas Tuchel’s side to keep a clean sheet in their 2021/22 top-flight opener and also netted a super strike from long-range to cap off a dominant 3-0 victory over London rivals Crystal Palace.

It was an unforgettable moment for the 22-year-old, who joined Chelsea’s youth setup 14 years ago and has had to wait very patiently for a chance in the senior side after loan spells at Huddersfield, Ipswich and French club Lorient, keeping his place in the starting XI after an impressive pre-season campaign and 120 minutes in the dramatic Uefa Super Cup win over Villarreal in Belfast.

New £97.5million club-record signing Lukaku was unable to make his second debut for the Blues on opening weekend due to quarantine restrictions following his high-profile move from Inter Milan, but is due to join in first-team training at Cobham on Tuesday and will be in line to feature against Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday.

But while he was not permitted to play against Palace, the Belgian still kept a close eye on proceedings and was delighted for Chalobah, having previously been close to Trevoh’s older brother Nathaniel during his first spell at Chelsea between 2011-14.

“I was speaking with Nate the other day after his brother scored,” Lukaku told Chelsea’s in-house media team in a video released on Monday.

“I got so emotional when his brother scored man. It got to me.

“Because Nate, his older brother, really embraced me when I came [in 2011] because we are like one year apart and he really took his time to show me around London and stuff.

“When his brother scored, it was too much.”
