Man City vs West Ham postponed as Storm Ciara block out sport schedule

Man City’s Premier League clash with West Ham has been axed as Storm Ciara obliterates the sporting schedule.

Football, rugby and horse racing have all been wiped out by the 90mph gale force winds that have prompted the Met Office to issue danger to life Amber alerts.

Today’s game at the Etihad is the most high-profile but “escalating” conditions forced Man City to act.

In a tweet, the club announced: “Due to extreme and escalating weather conditions and in the interests of supporter and staff safety, today’s Premier League match against West Ham has been postponed.”

The sold out Women’s Super League clash between north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham is also among the events.

Other WSL games postponed are Birmingham vs Brighton, Man City vs West Ham and Bristol City vs Reading.

The women’s Six Nations match between Scotland and England has been axed with Scottish Rugby saying efforts would be made to rearrange the fixture.

They said: “Safety of travelling fans, players and venue staff was the priority. Discussions are under way around rescheduling the game.”

Exeter’s race meeting, which was due to feature 2019 Grand National runner-up Magic of Light, was called off due to high winds.

Punchestown and Southwell have also closed their gates over safety fears.

However, today’s only remaining Premier League game between Sheffield United and Bournemouth is still due to go ahead.

And Brits have been warned to batten down the hatches with heavy rain expected to lead to flooding in the North while hurricane-force winds are expected to sweep across much of the country.

Meanwhile, fears of flying debris and large waves has sparked danger to life warnings.
