Man City weighs up swoop for Bayern hit man Lewandowski

Manchester City are tinkering with the idea of swooping on Bayern Munich hit man Robert Lewandowski as they attempt to sign an elite centre forward this summer.

The Poland striker has two years remaining on his current deal at Bayern Munich, which is worth more than £300,000 a week, and has yet to sign a new one.

Lewandowski played under current Man City boss Pep Guardiola while the Spaniard was in charge at Bayern between 2014 and 2016 where they won two Bundesliga titles.

City had tabled £100m bid in pursuit of Tottenham and England Captain Harry Kane which hit the rocks as Spurs  chairman Daniel Levy is determined to hang on to Kane for at least one more campaign, meaning City may have to consider alternatives.

Lewandowski is a high-quality option. The 32-year-old played under City manager Pep Guardiola at Bayern from 2014-16, winning two Bundesliga titles and the German Cup.

Real Madrid have a long-standing interest in Lewandowski and his agent, Pini Zahavi, recently brokered the deal to take David Alaba from Bayern to the Bernabeu.

Europe’s top clubs believe Lewandowski may be an achievable signing this summer as Bayern fear losing him for a reduced fee next year, when he would have 12 months remaining on his deal.

Lewandowski scored 41 goals in the league last season, an all-time record, and struck three times for Poland at Euro 2020.

Bayern have a new coach in Julian Nagelsmann, who often used a system without an orthodox centre forward during his time at RB Leipzig.
