Man United legend eager to become Celtic’s new manager

Roy Keane wants to become the new Celtic manager after nearly two years away from the dugout, according to reports.

The former Manchester United captain has not held a manager or head coach role in nearly a decade but has been in assistant manager roles at Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and the Republic of Ireland national teams recently.

Keane spent the final six months of his career at Celtic following his controversial exit from Manchester United in 2005 and helped the Parkhead club to the league title in 2006.

And according to The Sun, Keane wants to return to Scottish football and the move would fit nicely with what Celtic are looking for in Neil Lennon’s successor.

The Bhoys are reportedly looking to keep the existing coaching staff at the club but appoint a new head coach to direct them at the club, which would suit Keane as he does not have any current coaches working alongside him.

Celtic are also looking to appoint a new director of football as the dust settles following Lennon’s turbulent last few years in charge.

The 49-year-old was sacked by Celtic in late February when the club were 18 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premier League title race.

Lennon also oversaw the club’s early exits from the Champions League, Europa League and Scottish League Cup this season.

Steven Gerrard’s Gers have since gone on to seal their first top-flight title in a decade following further slip-ups by Celtic, who are currently led by interim coach John Kennedy.

Celtic’s temporary coach has guided the club to a 1-0 win over Aberdeen and a 0-0 draw away at Dundee United in his two matches in charge so far, with an Old Firm derby against Rangers coming up next weekend.

Keane’s potential arrival as the new Parkhead manager would see him come up against former Liverpool captain Gerrard in the battle for supremacy in Glasgow and Scotland.

The two midfielders faced off against each other nine times for the Premier League rivals, winning four matches each with one draw separating them.
